Local favourite Michael Schumacher took an impressive pole position from a string of Michelin-clad rivals at an overcast Hockenheimring on Saturday.

It's his 61st top-spot -- just four short of Ayrton Senna's record.

''[Michael's] second and third sectors were really extraordinary,'' said Ferrari's boss Jean Todt. Schu added he was 'not surprised' to be quickest.

He added: ''But I am a bit surprised at the gap.''

In Ross Brawn's first 28 words in summation of the session, the Ferrari technical chief called Schu 'outstanding,' 'incredible' and 'extraordinary.'

It rained hard overnight, leaving the German circuit 'green.'

German hero Schu aside, the top-seven was dominated by French-tyred Williams, BAR, McLaren and Renault, even if Jenson Button - third - will lose ten places.

Kimi Raikkonen moves up to third in the much improved McLaren, and he'd actually rather be there than second. ''I'll be on the inside,'' said the Finn.

Juan Pablo Montoya (2nd) is relieved to be back at the front. ''We've been working very hard,'' said the Colombian, ''and the package has improved a lot.''

He said only a mistake marred a run for pole.

Fernando Alonso, like most of the field, will be promoted (from sixth to fifth) with Button's penalty and he thinks Renault 'should be pleased' with Saturday.

''We were not very quick yesterday,'' said the Spaniard.

Ralf Schumacher's sub Antonio Pizzonia, very quick in pre-qualifying, is disappointed with eleventh after making some changes to the FW26's set-up.

But Sam Michael said the Brazilian simply didn't put together a 'good lap.'

BMW's Mario Theissen criticised Antonio's final lap as 'too careful.'

Olivier Panis, meanwhile, put the debuting 'B' version Toyota tenth. ''Yesterday, we didn't find the right balance,'' said the Frenchman.

''But today I felt much more confident.''

* Pole sitter Schumacher said GP-Sunday should be 'nice and hot and sunny.'
