NEWS Massa: Sauber Is Last Resort
DRIVERS STANDING 8-26-2002
While Heinz-Harald Frentzen looks ahead to 2003, 21-year-old Felipe Massa is forced to contemplate '03 as Sauber's test and development driver.

As the Brazilian's personal manager seeks out a better deal, however, the youngster from Sao Paulo has at least got the support of his countrymen.

A recent survey on the Brazilian website 'Amigos da Velocidade' (Speed Friends), revealed that Massa has the wholehearted support of his Grand Prix-mad home nation.

39% voted that that the Sauber driver has been performing 'very well', while 37% classified his rookie season of Formula One as 'good'. The remaining answers were divided between 'regular', 10%; 'normal', 9%; and 'poor', 5%.

While Felipe was unavailable to comment on his race-seat ousting, manager Riccardo Tedeschi told us that 'all options' were being explored to keep the youngster's Formula One racing career alive.

'Felipe will stay at Sauber (as development and reserve driver) only as a last resort. We are looking at all the options.'

Tedeschi also reiterated that Massa has been the subject of interest from a score of alternate Formula One outfits: 'I don't need to tell the names,' he was quoted as saying.

'You just take a look at the market and you will see which ones I'm talking about.'

Meanwhile, Heinz-Harald Frentzen says he is looking forward to working with old friends at Sauber Petronas next year.

The German, who will spend his tenth year at the pinnacle of motorsports with the Hinwil operation, made his Formula One debut for Peter Sauber in 1994.

'I am so pleased to be returning to Sauber for the 2003 season,' Heinz-Harald Frentzen said.

The 35-year-old, from Moenchengladbach in Germany, drove for the ailing Arrows team this year before quitting after his home Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Citing the growing future uncertainty at Leafield, Frentzen and manager Monty Field decided to channel all efforts into securing a solid drive for '03.

'My relationship with Peter Sauber has always been something special,' Frentzen adds. 'He gave me the chance in Formula 1 and with that the basis for my career.

'When I left Sauber in 1996, I always clearly said that at some time or other I would like to come back to this team. I am very happy that this has worked out now and that I will compete for them in my ten-year anniversary in Formula 1.'

Ousting the erratic rookie Massa, Frentzen will join 25-year-old countryman Nick Heidfeld in next year's Ferrari-powered C22 contender. Curiously, both pilots hark from the German town of Moenchengladbach.

'The performance of Sauber Petronas in the last years has really impressed me and I am convinced that together we can be successful,' Heinz-Harald adds.

'The renewed cooperation with a lot of old friends will be an additional motivation for me.'

Furthermore, we have discovered that Eddie Jordan's newly Ford-powered outfit tried desperately to land the recently available services of Heinz-Harald Frentzen for 2003. The Silverstone-based team's German sponsors are keen on having Deutsche talent behind the racing wheel.

Despite Frentzen's two grand prix wins for the team in 1999, however, the 35-year-old was mysteriously fired by the team mid-last year over a disagreement on the future direction of Jordan Grand Prix.

Continuing legal battles for lost income, however, ensured that Sauber were the more attractive option for Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
