Renault has backed Max Mosley's quest to slow Formula One down.

The F1 team's engineering chief Pat Symonds said the 'rate of development' in pitlane must be 'arrested before the level of performance becomes unacceptable.'

F1's FIA reckons lap times are about nine seconds faster than in 1998.

Renault driver and GDPA safety advocate Jarno Trulli adds the year-on-year gains are around 'two seconds. Next year I think we should get rid of four seconds.'

Symonds backed Mosley's plan to bring-in 2.4 litre V8s.

He said it would reduce power and also limit spending in the mid-term, ''but for '05 the only practical thing to do would be to extend the [engine] life.''
