(GMM - Shanghai) A sterling second place in Shanghai, England's Jenson Button met rock legend Sir Elton John before the event. JB told the Daily Mirror: ''He shook my hand and said 'so, will you be driving for Williams next year?' I was so surprised I just mumbled 'yes'.''

Ferrari and Fiat president Luca di Montezemolo held the constructors' trophy aloft after Rubens Barrichello won the first-ever Chinese Grand Prix. The Italian, who also pitched-in with radio congratulations in his native tongue for Barrichello, suffered the rare effects of 'victory-champagne-in-the-eyes' syndrome when the corks were popped.

F1 returnee Jacques Villeneuve admits some 'old habits' kicked in and curbed his pace around the Shanghai circuit this weekend. ''This (event) was really all about learning,'' said the French-Canadian.

A ridiculous rumour in the F1 paddock on Sunday was that Michael Schumacher spun his Ferrari on purpose in yesterday's qualifying session. Why? Supposedly to mask the necessity of an engine change due to a developing technical problem. Credible sources lambasted the indolent speculation.

Michael Schumacher may have had a shocker in Shanghai, but the world champion left observers in no doubt of his Ferrari's ultimate pace in the grand prix. On the final tour of the 56-lap event, the German - who finished twelfth after a pitlane start, contact with Christian Klien, a spin and a puncture - put in the fastest lap of all (1.32.238).
