NEWS Mercedes confirm Gary Paffett talks
DRIVERS STANDING 07-23-2004

Sauber is considering giving England's Gary Paffett a shot in Formula One next season, Mercedes' competition chief Norbert Haug said at Hockenheim on Thursday.

''We'll see where [the discussion] leads,'' Haug, a German, admitted.

Paffett, 23, tested a McLaren last year and is under-contract to engine partner Mercedes for whom he drives a German touring car in the competitive DTM series.

Haug told Reuters: ''It's possible he may have a [Sauber] test.''

Gary's agent Martin Hines told 'Motorsport News' that talks are going on with Sauber ''and two other teams. There is immense interest [in the driver].''

Paffett's Mercedes contract ends this year and Hines is '95 per cent certain' he'll join compatriots Jenson Button and David Coulthard on the '05 F1 grid.

A Sauber spokesman admitted there 'is a possibility' Giancarlo Fisichella may go to Renault or Williams next year so Peter Sauber is starting to 'look around.'

He said Gary is a 'very interesting possibility.'

Hines admitted a 'test role' is also possible for Paffett next season.
