NEWS Jordan Confirm Massa Contact
DRIVERS STANDING

11-23-2002

Jordan Grand Prix has confirmed that Brazilian ace Felipe Massa is in the running for the second Ford-powered seat.

Massa debuted for Sauber this year but the Paulista's often erratic form left him in the cold ahead of season 2003.

But his natural speed and racing verve was never in question and, it seems, has not been lost on the Silverstone-based Jordan team.

'He is one of a number of drivers we have had contact with,' a Jordan spokesperson revealed. 'We know he is very highly regarded. But nothing has been agreed.'

Last week, Jordan announced that some 40 percent of its total budget - more than $30 million dollars - would be lost with the departure of major backer Deutsche Post World Net.
And that occurrence, says the team, have made commercial considerations all the more important in the selection of a driver for the sister EJ13.

'It is true that the identity of our second driver will be commercially influenced,' said Jordan's marketing director Mark Gallagher.

Giancarlo Fisichella will steer one Ford-powered EJ13 next year but the future of the team's second contracted driver, Takuma Sato, is far less secure.

'They are both under contract and have equality but when it comes to Sato's position in the team, if necessary our decision will be commercially driven,' he added.

But Jordan will not accept a pay-driver based solely on his sponsorship package. 'We have to consider a driver's ability and the overall package too, because our objective is to try to finish fourth in the constructors' championship.'

If possible, though, Jordan will field an unchanged line-up next year but only if 26-year-old Takuma Sato can find a strong package of corporate Japanese backing.

Gallagher says: 'Taku made brilliant progress last season and we are working closely with him to find backing.'

Jaguar refugee Eddie Irvine was linked with a Jordan return, but the new financial crisis seems to have left the 37-year-old Ulsterman without a racing home.

But British backer Benson & Hedges were considering an amplification of its Jordan backing if a 'prominent British driver' founds his way into a yellow EJ13.

'No prizes for guessing who that is,' said a coy Irvine recently.

Our sources indicate that fellow Jaguar refugee, Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa, has also been in recent contact with Jordan.

The 31-year-old comes with solid experience and ample backing from oil brand Repsol.
