Jaguar
Racing and EDS Announce Technology and Sponsorship Partnership
Milton Keynes (UK), 14th
February 2002
02-14-2002
Jaguar Racing and EDS announced today they have signed
a technology sponsorship agreement through which EDS software will
drive the digital design of Jaguar Racing's Formula One cars.
Under the three-year agreement, EDS becomes an official
technology partner to Jaguar Racing. Jaguar Racing is using product
lifecycle management (PLM) software from EDS' PLM Solutions line of
business for the design and evolution of its racecars.
"Through the application of EDS PLM Solutions products
and services, Jaguar Racing has been able to develop its entire racecar
using a completely digital process," said Jaguar Racing Team Principal
Niki Lauda. "In one of the most time critical businesses in the world,
this gives us a leading edge in both development time and ultimately,
competitiveness. Because our development process is entirely digital,
we are able to make changes and experiment with new configurations at
a faster pace than many of our competitors.
"At a time when many F1 teams are commenting on sponsorship difficulties
within the business, we are delighted with what is both a significant,
long term sponsorship deal and state-of-the-art technology that will benefit
Jaguar Racing and its partners."
"Sponsoring Jaguar Racing's Formula One team enables EDS to showcase its
industry-leading PLM software in action," said Tony Affuso, president,
EDS PLM Solutions. "Winning races requires much more than driving across
the finish line. More than ever before, technology is an enabler - a way
to gain fractions of seconds that mean the difference between winning
or losing on the track. With our extensive work in the commercial automotive
sector, we have gained valuable expertise that can be applied to this
industry overall. We look forward to sharing success with Jaguar Racing
in this win-win relationship."
Designing Race Cars Digitally
PLM software enables companies to digitally produce and share information
on products such as cars or airplanes - instantly and globally - via local
networks and the Internet. With more than 1.6 million seats of software
installed, EDS PLM Solutions is the leading supplier of PLM solutions
in the manufacturing industry.
"Shortening cycle times is a key criteria for our business," Lauda said.
"Major design changes are often required between races - a time span as
short as two weeks. These changes can result in quicker lap times - times
that are just tenths of a second less can provide the team with the vital
edge over our competitors. This would simply be impossible without digital
technology. The software provided by EDS is a critical element of our
future development."
Global Sponsorship
"This is a natural way for EDS to raise its global brand profile while
demonstrating what we do," said Don Uzzi, senior vice president of
global advertising, marketing and communications for EDS. "Formula
One is all about managing complexity and deploying technology to maximize
its value. This is what EDS does every day for its clients."
