NEWS de la Rosa looks back on Malaysia
DRIVERS STANDING Pedro de la Rosa put in a solid drive at Sepang, bar one fatal mistake...

De la Rosa wants to spend less time in the pits next time Pedro de la Rosa recorded his second finish of the season with 10th place at Sepang, but it was a frustrating race for the Spaniard.

Pedro was on a two-stop strategy, and in the early laps he got caught behind the BARs of Jacques Villeneuve and Olivier Panis. However on the seventh lap he lost his front wing when he tried to pass Panis under braking into the first corner. The Frenchman took his normal line, and the hole Pedro was aiming for closed in a hurry.

That led to a pit stop that cost over 30s and dropped Pedro out of possible contention for points in another race of high attrition. After the race he admitted that he'd been '80% at fault' for the clash with Panis.

"I was not in [the gap], basically," he said. "I just could not stop the car any more, so put that down to me, and that's it. I just made a mistake. I was trying to overtake him, because I could see clearly that Villeneuve was on a one-stopper, and I was on a two, so I had to move. I should have waited more, but that's motor racing.

"You always know when other people are on a one and you are on a two that you have to take more risks, and these things happen. I have no problem with that."

After his stop Pedro held his own against cars that had lapped him, and put in some good times. He eventually recorded the 10th best lap of the race, only 0.1s off the best of fifth-placed Nick Heidfeld, and over 0.6s ahead of sixth placed Felipe Massa.

"The car was not badly balanced in the race, and my pace was reasonable. In the past two races I've had a very busy time in the pits, basically. I think I was driving well, because the car was quite well balanced for the R3 standards.

" Pedro admits that this week's back-to-back test between the R3 and R2 at Barcelona will be critical.

"It's quite important. This race was proved that we are not as far back as expected. I qualified 17th, but I was 0.3s from P12 or something like that, which was not that bad. But we are slow still. In Barcelona we'll know finally how we are against the R2, because there's no point in taking a decision unless we know the R2 is going to be a big step forwards. If we bring back the R2 and are struggling like the R3, it will be embarrassing."
