Schumacher's leap into Ross Brawn's arms at the end of the Brazilian GP,
was an expression of relief after all the tension of a race which he had
not expected to produce his second victory of the season. "Of course I am very happy to have won this grand prix," admitted Michael, who was still savouring the moment two days later. "After the first two rounds of the championship and even after practice at Interlagos, we were not sure what to expect in this grand prix. To tell the truth, Friday and Saturday had left us a bit pessimistic, because the BMW-Williams seemed very strong and threatening. "However, it's our job to get round this type of thing. Obviously, we hoped for a win, but it was not a foregone conclusion. But the combination of the new car and the new tyres made the difference," explained the four times world champion, adding, "the win was down to the whole team, who did a perfect job. We all know that in Maranello we have an excellent team, made up of exceptional professionals and I proud to work for a team like that. To set out for Brazil with two different cars and to overcome all the difficulties that go with that and to overcome them all was really extraordinary and I would like to thank all the team for what they did." Sadly, Rubens Barrichello had nothing to be happy about in the grand prix, forced to retire after a great start to his home grand prix. |

"I am really
sorry for Rubens," said Michael. "I am lost for words for what happened
to him. For the second race in a row Rubens made a great start and once
again he was not rewarded for it. He had fought his way into the lead
before something failed. It really does seem as though his home race is
not a lucky one for him. But Rubens is going very well this year and soon
he too will have the new car and that means both of us will be very strong
and competitive for the rest of the season." There have been plenty of column inches dedicated to Juan Pablo Montoya's verbal attack on Michael, after the Williams driver lost his front wing after running into the back of the Ferrari, forcing him to pit before climbing back through the field. "It's easy to make rash remarks immediately after a race," reckoned Michael. "The stewards certainly would have watched the incident several times and as they took no action, one can assume they saw things differently to Juan Pablo." |
