DRIVERS STANDING FIA ask BAR to remove illegal device
07-25-2004

BAR incurred the wrath of rival Formula One teams and the governing body when it was asked to remove a car's illegal 'electro-hydraulic' device at Hockenheim.

Jenson Button ran the device, which replicates front-wheel torque transfer, in Friday's practice but the team took it off as the Briton went qualifying.

Tech boss Geoff Willis said it was ''brought to the [FIA's] attention.

''We will have some more private conversations.''

The Englishman said he opted to run the device in the first place because he believed it conforms to the regulations so 'we are seeking ... clarification.'

Ferrari's Ross Brawn denied he had blown the whistle but said Renault had earlier run the system and was told not to control it with electro-hydraulics.

He added: ''[So we're a] little bit shocked about it.''

Geoff Willis, meanwhile, is worried the governing FIA's German GP ruling has implications 'for consequences' elsewhere on the Honda-powered 006 challenger.

* Button said he had 'liked' the feel of the torque transfer device.
