NEWS Button Awaits BAR Challenge
DRIVERS STANDING
10-01-2002

Jenson Button is eagerly awaiting his transition from a two-year Renault stint to the 'homey' British American Racing squad.

The 22-year-old Englishman, from Bicester, burst onto the scene as a teenager teammate for Ralf Schumacher at the newly BMW-powered Williams team.

Come season's end, Button was giving the German something to worry about including a qualifying thrashing at the daunting Spa-Francorchamps driver's circuit.

Last year, Button endured a difficult season in the equally difficult Renault-powered B201, but his fortunes turned in '02 with a competitive showing alongside Italian teammate Jarno Trulli.

And, for 2003, Button will face the biggest challenge of his career as he starts a long-term driver relationship with BAR-Honda alongside 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve.

'I think it's a very 'homey' team, and the guys to work with seem very good,' said Button of the Honda-powered Brackley outfit.'

In 2003, BAR will be the exclusive recipients of Japanese engine manufacturer Honda's works efforts.

'I'm looking forward to it,' the Frome-born charger adds of his impending BAR challenge. 'I have a four-year contract, so I hope it is a place I can find a good base and work toward a world championship.'

Button has scored thirteen points to teammate Trulli's nine this year, even though his latest effort at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the weekend did not match up to the Italian's feisty form.

'Eighth isn't really the best ever,' he said, comparing the lowly position to Jarno Trulli's fifth.

'Giancarlo (Fisichella) pushed me onto the grass at Turn 2 and I didn't have much luck at my stop, coming back out in the middle of a big group of cars.

'We raced with less wing than some of the others, but although I was quicker down the straights, I was losing too much time on the exit of the corner before the straight.

'I pushed all the way but when there are so few retirements, it's hard to do much better.'

Taking the season as a whole, Button expresses his disappointment that the R202 has failed to build on the potential demonstrated early in the season. 'Generally, it's been good,' he says.

'The start of the season went very well; it's just since then we haven't had huge improvements. We're not as competitive as at the start of the season, which is a shame.

'But yes, it's been a relatively good season, it's just disappointing we havn't be up there racing with the top teams.'

And, for Suzuka? 'There is a possibility for some points.' END
